Chapter 6 Excerpt - College Recruiting

Many S-A’s rely on their HS coach to provide recommendations and guidance in the recruiting process. Who wouldn’t? Your coach is someone who has a detailed knowledge of your athletic talents and accomplishments due to the fact that you may have played for them for a number of years.

Some families fall into the trap of thinking that their HS coach is (1) - qualified to evaluate their athletic talent as it applies to continuing your athletic career at the college level and (2) - wants to help with the recruiting process. We surveyed several hundred families and many received no help from their HS coach and almost all expected more assistance. That’s usually the first and last place families turn for help and when they don’t get it from the one person who they assumed would be able to help them, their recruiting process can go down hill very fast.

Just because your coach has been coaching for a number of years at the HS level doesn’t necessarily make them qualified to evaluate your talent as it applies to college. Perhaps your coach never played athletics in college or is not that familiar with the talent at various colleges and divisions in your area. While there are many qualified coaches at the HS level, there are many more that either don’t know how to help you get recruited, don’t know how to evaluate your talent, and honestly don’t want to even get involved in your recruiting process
