Question: How do you
properly set swing plane to hit the low inside pitch? My coach tells me I'm
dipping my rear shoulder on my swing. I tilt to adjust my posture to set my
swing plane. It seems to me the only other option is to lower my hands and
thus disconnect my hands from my body which seems likely to reduce momentum.
Answer: Sometimes the best advice you can find is located within each
player. To effectively "center" the low pitch, good hitters must tilt the
shoulders so the barrel has an upward path to the low pitch. You mentioned
the word disconnect. Good hitters at all levels can still "dip" the rear
shoulder and "drop" their hands to allow their body and barrel to stay
online with the bottom of the strike zone. Some of the best misinformation
coaches can provide to hitter is to swing level and don't drop you hands.
Look no further than the top hitters in baseball and college and you'll see
dipping shoulders and a lowering of the hands as they prepare to hit.
