Ball with Boutin: A Change-up -
June 1. 2005          Interview Index

Ted Novio is a tremendous pitching coach who has worked with players at all levels.  Ted was a pitching coach in the prestigious Cape Cod League for several years. In fact, a character in the book Slider is based on Novio.  Slider is a great summer read for any player or parent.

In this interview, Ted talks about the issue of curveballs at the youth level and gives his opinions on this hot topic. In addition, the change-up is discussed as an alternative to the curve and Ted talks about some of the coaching points he gives to players learning this great pitch.

The change-up is a devastating pitch. Keith Foulke of the Red Sox would not be in baseball without his, and I recently watched a Division I relief pitcher who was touching 90 mph, come in and throw three straight change-ups to absolutely buckle the hitter and leave him standing dumbfounded (shout out to his pitching coach GD for making those calls!)

Anyhow, enough of The Advisor, let's listen to Ted Novio discuss it!
