Title: Concussion Facts

Author: Ray Lauenstein

Any athlete, especially soccer and football players, are at risk for suffering a concussion. A concussion is the result of a blow to the brain or spine which usually causes unconsciousness. Symptoms include vomiting, rapid pulse, flushed face, headache and restlessness, usually lasting 12-24 hours.

According to the American Academy of Neurology, two concussions in a short time can kill you! Many times athletes suffer head blows that don’t seem serious at the time. Usually they go right back in to the game. A second blow to the head within hours can cause sudden, fatal brain swelling. According to Men's Health Magazine ( July 1997) and Dr. Jay Rosenberg, ‘Theres no such thing as a mild concussion." Make sure any complaint of headaches or appearances of uneasiness, loss of coordination and comprehension are taken seriously. A complete neurological exam is recommended for an athlete who has suffered a concussion or unusual blow to the head.

Life long health and well-being is not to be sacrificed for short term gains and part-time glory.
