Author: Ray Lauenstein
Girls Who Play Sports
According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, girls who play sports are:
- 92% less likely to do drugs
- 80% less likely to have unwanted pregnancies
- 40-60% less likely to get breast cancer as adults
- less likely to be depressed
- three times more likely to stay in school
- more likely to leave abusive relationships
- more likely to feel good about their bodies
- 80% of women identified as key leaders in Fortune 500 companies participated in youth sports
- HS girls who spend more time participating in sports also tend to have higher grades.
- The number of grants to women, at schools with the largest athletic programs, has jumped from 17,733 in 1990 to 22, 236 in 1995.
While Gender Equity mandates equivalency in college athletics, and opportunities are increasing for female athletes, the recruiting and operating budgets for women only represent 18% and 24% of the total budget (1992). This means you need to find the opportunities and recruit the schools that will want you!
