Title: Know the NCAA Rules of Recruitment - Lynn Holleran, Compliance Director of Boston College

Author: Ray Lauenstein

As a prospective college student athlete you should know that somebody is watching you, and the schools recruiting you for rules violations. It's the NCAA. Unfortunately, the NCAA rule book is as fat as Manhattan’s yellow pages and duller than watching grass grow! Sorry to say, but there are many places for you to break the rules and sometimes not even know it.

Thankfully you do not have to memorize the NCAA rule book, instead, practice common sense and follow the advice of Lynn Holleran the compliance director for Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA.

  1.  Register with the NCAA clearinghouse. See your guidance counselor.

  2.  Do not accept money or gifts to play in any competition or tournament.

  3.  Do not sign anything without consulting with your parents, coaches, and athletic directors.

  4.  You can call a college coach collect or on an 800 line at any time. They cannot call you (in most cases) until July 1 after the completion of your Junior year.

  5.  Practice common sense. If you have to stop and ask yourself, "Is this legal or ethical?" or "Is this something I should be involved with?" then you most likely should remove yourself from that situation.

  6.  You can visit a campus at any time and as many times as you want provide you pay.

  7.  Senior year, you are entitled to have one expense paid trip to a particular school. You may receive no more then 5 such visits.

Rules differ in Div. I, II and III as well as Junior College and NAIAD. Call the NCAA with specific questions. If you practice common sense then you should be ok regardless of the school or classification.
