Author: Steven Wininger, MA Professor of Psychology, F.S.U.

Making the Transition to the Collegiate Classroom

Some college freshman have difficulties adjusting to the collegiate classroom. A good way to view a college class is by comparing it to a summer sports camp (SSC). Follow the same procedure for choosing a class as you would selecting a camp.

1.Before you choose an SSC, you compare it to others. In the same manner, you will need to compare the classes you choose to take. Consider the professor's reputation and time of day the class is given.

2. Look over fliers and brochures. Each class has a Syllabus (an outline describing the class and the professor’s policies), it tells you what books you need, the dates of all assignments and tests. This is vital to your success, your teacher might not remind you of deadlines.

3. Pack your bags for camp- Pack your Books for class (and your pen and your paper etc.) Never show up unprepared.

4. At an SSC you are there to learn from top coaches- In college you have top professors, they really know their stuff. So take part and ask questions, takes good notes and listen. If you are unclear of something ask for clarification. Professors like students who are curious and ask questions.

5. When you learn a new technique or form at SSC, you usually have a coach or camper check it out for you to make sure its correct. After class, make an outline of your lecture notes and you can easily locate each topic. It makes a great study tool. If any notes are confusing, mark them, and ask the professor for clarification.

6. When you attend a SSC you expect to leave a better player. You expect new and improved skills. In much the same way, at the end of collegiate semester you walk away with new skills and knowledge. Remember that you and your family paid for the privilege, so get the most of your money. Good luck!
