Title: Ask The Advisor

Author: Ray Lauenstein

Q: My parents want me to visit schools this summer. What should I do to get started.

A: If you haven’t done so already, narrow your prospective schools down to 5 or 6. Consider your preference for geographical location, size of school, public or private affiliation, setting ( city, suburb, rural), and level of athletic program. Next call each school and have them send you all of their information before you visit. Call in advance to 1.) schedule a tour, 2.) Schedule an interview, 3) make sure the coach, a financial aid and admissions officer will be on campus to speak with you.

Read any and all information about each school before you go visit. Have specific questions prepared for each person you will speak with. Ask the coach if there are any student-athletes on campus you can speak with and ask them a million questions. The students are the ones that will give you the most honest and perceptive answers to your questions.

Q: Whenever I start summer weight training and conditioning I am so sore I can hardly get out of bed and walk down the stairs. Is there anything I can do to prevent this.

A: You are experiencing what is known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) which is caused by lactic acid buildup and micro-tears in the muscle fibers. Unfortunately there is no preventing it, but you can do a few things to lessen the effects.

1. Ease into your workouts-start slowly.

2. Stretch and cool down longer then usual before and after your workouts.

3. Do some low intensity, low impact cardio -vascular exercise the next day. This will help increase blood flow, remove lactic acid and aid recovery.

4. Drink plenty of water and take a few anti-inflammatories (Advil) after your workouts.
