Listen to the College Coaches
Most HS age students do not listen to many people. Often you listen to or pretend to listen to the people your parents usually hate. The student athlete who has his/her sights set on being better and even playing in college should really listen to what the college coaches have to say. Its rare that you will know more about what it takes to reach the next level then they will. Do yourself a favor and read the following statements and think how they apply to you.
"One of the best ways to get the attention of college coaches is by playing Tier 2 junior hockey. Both the US Junior Hockey League and the North American Junior Hockey League are closely scouted by coaches. You can play until you’re 20, so many of the players have finished high school and are looking for the right college. The first priority of the junior leagues is to put kids into school.
Mark Mazzoleni, Hockey Coach, Miami University.
"The college selection process for a prospective student-athlete is by no means an exact science. This makes establishing and maintaining meaningful communication with the coaches at schools in which you are interested in very important.
Do not sit around and wait for something to happen. College visits, admission interviews and the application process should be well planned and organized. Work with the coach , but do not expect him or her to hand walk you through the process."
Dave Urick, Men’s Lacrosse Coach, Georgetown University
