Title: Ask the Advisor - Summer Camps
Author: Ray Lauenstein
Q:
I am going to be a senior next year and I want to go to a summer camp to gain exposure and play against good competition. What should I do?A: Rising seniors want to get their name to as many coaches as possible. You should go to a camp that offers instruction from several coaches who come from colleges you want to go to or who play at the level you can project at (Division I, II, or III).
Call the camp and ask for specific names of coaches who will be at the camp. Some coaches appear for one day to do a clinic and then split. Make sure the coaches at your camp are actively involved in instruction.
Some camps, particularly basketball, are competition camps. Yes, there are drills and clinics, but college coaches actually come to just watch the games. Most camps are instructional though and if you want to get seen you must continue to play your sport all summer and hook on with a traveling team to see how you match up against stiff competition from outside. Being the best player in your town means nothing until you prove yourself outside the county lines!
