Specialize or Play Them All:  The multi-sport dilemma and its impact on recruiting.

“I like multi-sport athletes. I love hearing, ‘Coach I can’t make the visit to campus this weekend because my football team is in the playoffs,’ from kids I am recruiting.  Year round baseball players get burned out and are usually not as good athletically as a multi-sport athletes.”

-          Greg DiCenzio, assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator for Northeastern University Baseball Team

As the industry of “Getting Notice to Play In College” grows, so do the questions about playing more than one sport.  The dilemma stems from two reasons primarily:

1.       The necessity of developing your skills to a high enough level for college and possibly scholarship consideration demands more time than the high school season provides. You also need more coaching and better competition which is something AAU Programs, Club Soccer, and Jr Hockey (for example) provides.
